Volume 32, No. 139 Wednesday, July 26, 2017
Commissioners: Liberty County Commissioners met yesterday morning and spent about an hour working through the short agenda. Prior to the end of each fiscal year, commissioners vote on salaries and allowances for all elected officials. On Tuesday, commissioners voted to keep salaries and allowances the same as last year. The only exceptions are the six justices of the peace and the six constables. Those 12 officeholders will each get a 9% increase for an annual salary of $45,000 for each office.
Evacuation Help: This reminder from the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management - anyone who believes they might need help evacuating the area during an emergency, such as a hurricane, is asked to call 2-1-1 and register with the state. Do this even if signed up in the past. Officials say all registrations need to be renewed each year. For more info, call Liberty County Emergency Management at 936-334-3219.
LISD New Students: Liberty ISD’s new student registration for those in Pre-K through 12th grade will be next Tuesday through Thursday, August 1-3. It’s from 8 to 11 a.m. and then noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, August 1 and 2. The Liberty school district’s new student registration continues Thursday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All of that takes place at San Jacinto Elementary School, 1629 Grand Avenue in Liberty. Parents or guardians need their driver’s license and proof of residency along with the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card and shot records. Those signing up a child for Liberty ISD’s Pre-K also need proof of income.
Social Security: Each year trustees of the Social Security Administration issue a report on the financial outlook of the agency’s Retirement, Survivors and Disability Trust Funds. This year’s report concluded – as have previous reports – that the cost of benefits will continue to increase faster than projected income through 2037 with a projected reduction in benefits starting in 2035. A change in Social Security funding will have to be made to prevent that projected reduction in benefit amounts. If you have questions about Social Security, you can link to the official website from You can also call the Beaumont Social Security office at 866-613-2864 or the nationwide toll-free number at 800-772-1213.
