Memorial Stadium: The Liberty school district has been making improvements to Memorial Stadium over the summer. Julie Hebert, director of business services for LISD, said work includes a $35,800 water irrigation system plus improved weed management for the playing surface. The school board also approved funding in May for all new bleacher seating. Cost for that upgrade is approximately $101,000. In addition, LISD Director of Maintenance and Operations Robert Ward and his crews have been power-washing and painting at the stadium this summer. This reminder - Liberty’s first home game is a non-district contest against the Anahuac Panthers on September 1.
DISD Pre-K: The Dayton school district’s Colbert Elementary Pre-K Registration Round-Up for the 2017-18 school year starts tomorrow. Parents should attend one of these come-and-go events. The first is tomorrow from noon to 7 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or Friday from 8 a.m. to noon – all at Colbert Elementary, 231 South Colbert Street in Dayton. Parents or guardians need their driver’s license, proof of residency and proof of income along with the child’s birth certificate, Social Security card and shot records. For more, call 936-258-2727.
Burnham Classic: The 28th Annual Burnham Classic Golf Tournament, benefiting Tri-County Services, is coming up on August 4-6 at Magnolia Ridge Country Club. Organizers are looking for businesses and families that want to be an advertised sponsor. A $250 donation gives advertising signage at the golf tourney plus admission for two people to all functions except golf play. A $75 donation gets one person admitted to all functions except golf play. For more information on the Burnham Classic or to sign up as a sponsor, call Bruce Burnham at 713-907-5772 or Robert Dunn at 936-346-3711.
Scam Warning: Yet another scam involving the Social Security Administration is being reported. The Office of the U.S. Inspector General is warning of crooks using the phone to scam beneficiaries into giving them sensitive, personal information. If someone claiming to be from Social Security calls, hang up and then call Social Security to confirm it is a legitimate contact from the agency. The Beaumont office phone number is 866-613-2864. The nationwide number is 800-772-1213.
