TS Cindy: Tropical Storm Cindy continues to move northwest towards the southwest Louisiana and the upper Southeast Texas Coast. To the right of and along the track, the national weather service says to expect tropical storm conditions, with the main threat to SE Texas being heavy rain along and east of a line from Galveston to Houston to Livingston beginning tonight and continuing into Thursday.
Citizens Police Academy: Area residents are invited to participate in a free Citizens Police Academy starting Monday, July 31. It’s sponsored by Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader and District Attorney Logan Pickett. The 10-week class will take place on Monday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. with graduation set for Sept. 25. The Citizens Police Academy does not provide law enforcement certification. Instead, Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said it’s for community members who want to learn more about the functions of the sheriff’s department and district attorney’s office while becoming goodwill ambassadors to the community. The class is limited to the first 30 who sign up. Applications are available from the Liberty County Dispatchers Office at 2400 Beaumont Ave. in Liberty. Those applications are due by July 14. Chamber 500: The Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce’s 28th Annual Steak Dinner and 500 Auction is set for Friday, July 28, at the Dayton Community Center. Chamber President Mary Anne Campbell said, this year, the number of major prizes in the popular 500 Auction have increased from 12 to 15. The steak dinner and silent auction will get under way at 6 p.m. July 28 with auctioneer Brady Hansen. Tickets are $100. That includes a steak dinner plus a chance in the 500 Drawing with this year’s top prize $5,000 in gold. Get your ticket by calling the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber office at 336-5736.
Dayton: The Dayton City Council met Monday and approved some changes to the fee schedule for use of the Dayton Community Center by non-profit organizations. Dayton Mayor Jeff Lambright said non profit groups will basically be divided into two groups. Group one consists of those not for profit organizations that directly benefit Dayton. Cost to those groups for use of the center is a flat rate of $500. For all other non profit groups, cost for use of the center is $800.
