Johnston Celebration: There is a recovery celebration tomorrow for Liberty County Pct. 1 Constable Justin Johnston. He was struck by a vehicle back on Feb. 15 while working an off-duty job at the park and ride on S.H. 146 in Dayton. After a lengthy hospital stay and multiple surgeries, he has undergone rehab and is continuing his recovery at home. That celebration is tomorrow from 2 to 10 p.m. at the TVE Fairgrounds on FM 563 in Liberty. There will be live musical entertainment by Southern Breeze, the Phillip Griffin Band, the John Hord Band and Justin Abshire. There will also be food trucks, vendors plus live and silent auctions. Assault: An altercation with an off-duty sheriff’s deputy has led to the arrest of a Dayton area man. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Department reports Investigator Josh Cummins was returning home with his family near Kenefick Tuesday when a speeding car passed before crashing into a ditch and overturning. When Cummins reached that vehicle, the driver was crawling out of the window asking Cummins “not to call the police”. When Josh Cummins identified himself as law enforcement, the driver is said to have sucker-punched Cummins before fleeing. Cummins was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released. JP Pct 6 Ralph Fuller issued a warrant for 37-year-old Codey James Black on a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer. Black, said to live in the Dayton area but with no permanent address, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Dayton Lake Estates. At last report, Codey Black remained in Liberty County Jail with bail set at $100,000.
