Sales Tax Collections: Sales tax dollars have decreased for seven of the 10 incorporated cities in Liberty County for the first half of 2017 as compared to the same six months last year. However, both Dayton and Liberty did post gains. So, when all cities are combined, sales tax revenue is down less than 1 percent countywide. That’s a real dollar total decrease of $32,828 for the 10 incorporated cities countywide that receive sales tax income. Those revenues are used by cities in their general budgets. Sales tax payments to the City of Liberty are up by 3.51 percent for the first two quarters while the City of Dayton posted a 3.41 percent increase. On the other hand, the City of Cleveland is down 6.83 percent year-to-date. For the six-month period, local share of sales tax payments to all 10 cities countywide totals $4,347,235
Auto/Pedestrian: An auto pedestrian accident in the Kenefick Area Monday night resulted in 31-year-old Dewayne Dale Tatum, being air lifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition. It was just before 9 p.m. Monday when DPS Investigators say Benjamin Shelton was driving on CR #647. Department of Public Safety Trooper Eric Burse said the driver admitted he was distracted for just a moment while negotiating a sharp curve in the roadway, and struck the man who was on the side of the road. The investigation into the accident continues. DPS Trooper Eric Burse said the driver Benjamin Shelton, age 18, may be cited for Inattentive Driving.
Taste of Dayton: The 13th Annual Taste of Dayton Expo is set for Thursday June 15th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dayton Community Center. Dayton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Paula Moorhaj said there are a few vendor spaces available. Cost for vendor spaces is $100 for Dayton Chamber members and $150 for non-members. Scholarships: Attention recent high school graduates, Texas State Senator Robert Nichols invites qualified students to apply for a Texas Armed Services Scholarship of up to $4,000 a year. The scholarship is a way to reward students interested in military service. It’s for those who will participate in a ROTC program at a Texas university.
