Drowning: The 54-year-old Dayton man who drowned Saturday afternoon while fishing at Rollover Pass in Gilchrist has been identified as Bret Walker. Witnesses said Mr. Walker was wade fishing on the beach side of Rollover Pass when he was swept under. The Galveston County Sheriff’s office reports he was underwater for about five minutes before resurfacing. That’s when one of his friends, Keith Platt of Dayton, swam out, brought Mr. Walker back to shore and began CPR. EMS arrived and began treating the victim, who was said to be breathing on his own. Then, Bret Walker of Dayton was transported by air ambulance to UTMB in Galveston where he was pronounced dead around 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Protest Deadline: An important reminder from the Liberty County Central Appraisal District - the official deadline for most property owners to file a written notice of protest of their appraised values is Wednesday. The actual protest will come later, but you must indicate your intention now. Liberty County Chief Appraiser Lana McCarty said slightly more than 48,000 property value notices have been mailed out this year. Lana McCarty said if you did not receive a notification of your property value, it may be best to check with the CAD office to ask about your specific property. The Liberty County Central Appraisal District’s phone number in Liberty is 936-336-5722.
