TIRZ: Liberty County Commissioners, met in a special called meeting yesterday, for public discussion on the possibility of the county participating in what is called a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone. Referred to as a “Tirz” this is a way for a developer to recoup some of their investment, not through charging additional taxes as would a MUD district, but by agreement with the existing taxing authorities. If for example, Liberty County agreed to a 60/40 arrangement, Liberty County would pay the developer 60% of the property taxes received and keep 40%, for up to 25 years, depending on the agreement reached. The City of Cleveland has already agreed, in theory, to the 60/40 plan. The vote was unanimous in favor of negotiating. No final agreement has been struck.
Dayton Val and Sal: The class Valedictorian and Salutatorian are not just the two top ranked members of their graduating class they also serve as representative of their classmates. According to DHS Principal Jeff McCrackin, both fit the role they have been chosen for perfectly. The Dayton High School Class of 2017 will hold graduation ceremonies of some 330 grads, this Saturday May 27th at 3 p.m. at Lamar University’s Montagne Center in Beaumont, at 4401 S. MLK Jr Parkway.
