McCarty Removed: As of about 3 p.m. yesterday, Liberty County Commissioner Precinct 1 Mike McCarty was removed from office by visiting Judge Ernest McClendon. We reported on the petition filed by Liberty County Attorney Mathew Poston asking for the removal of Mike McCarty from his currently held office as Liberty County Commissioner. The petition filed by the county attorney alleged incompetency and official misconduct. Yesterday, Judge McClendon signed the order and, acting on a recommendation from County Judge Jay Knight, appointed Liberty County Businessman Bruce Karbowski as his replacement. Bruce Karbowski, executed a surety bond and was sworn in to that office following McCarty’s removal.

HLSR Scholarships: A total of $160,000 in scholarships has been awarded to eight Liberty County high school seniors from the Houston Livestock Show Scholarship program. Those students will each receive a $20,000, four-year Metropolitan, Opportunity or School Art scholarship. Recipients include Dayton’s Emaline Robinson and Jessica Nunez plus Liberty’s Daniela Villegas and Kaylyn Erskins. Also awarded scholarships were Tarkington’s Andrew Hare, Cleveland’s Abbagayle Kirk, Hardin’s Zachary Barrett and Alayna Bautsh from Hull-Daisetta.

Tax Free: Texans will get a break from state and local sales and use taxes over the Memorial Day weekend when they purchase certain energy-efficient products. The annual Energy Star sales tax free weekend begins this Saturday, May 27, and continues through Monday, May 29.

Hardin Elementary: The new Hardin Elementary School opened yesterday. The Liberty County Pct 3 Constable Mark Davison is urging drivers to be patient as people get accustomed to the traffic flow at that new campus. The new Hardin Elementary School is on S.H. 146 at County Road 2003 North.
