Voting: Early voting for city and school elections continues today and tomorrow. Some local entities have cancelled elections with no opposition, but there are a number of elections being held in Liberty County this Saturday, May 6. There is one contested race in the Liberty school district between D-Ann Berry and Daniel Balch for Position 5 trustee. The city of Ames has two contested races. Mayor John White is challenged by Emmitt O’Donald Albro while Position 1 incumbent David Papillion is facing Veronica Williams Mallet. Moving on to the Dayton school board election, Adam Piserelle and Josh Day are vying for Position 4 while Kerry Bartee, Barry Pruitt and Lisa Rayburn Butcher are running for DISD Trustee Position 7. The Cleveland school district is holding an $80 million bond election. Also holding elections are the city of Cleveland, city of Devers and Devers school district plus the city of Plum Grove. There’s also a Liberty County Local Option Election this Saturday to allow for the sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed drinks, within the boundaries of Liberty County Justice of the Peace Precinct 3. Voting times and places vary, so check with your local government’s administrative office for details or tune in to KSHN FM 99.9
Parker Park Rededication: The City of Dayton held a rededication ceremony Saturday for the John William Parker and Emma Blake Parker Children’s Park on North Winfree Street. Best known as simply “Parker Park”, the small neighborhood city park has undergone about $160,000 in renovations and additions. That work began slightly more than a year ago, initially as a restoration project when water well drilling near the park resulted in significant damage to the Winfree Street park area. There are several new additions including a covered basketball court and a covered party area among others.
ACE League: The ACE League Baseball Day for special-needs children is this Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Liberty Municipal Park. Organizers say, right now, ACE is in need of small bottles of water, Capri Sun fruit drinks, adult size baseball gloves, sunscreen, baby wipes and hand sanitizer.
