McCarty: Prior to yesterday’s meeting of Liberty County Commissioners, Pct. 1 Commissioner Mike McCarty took the opportunity to speak to those in attendance. Last Friday McCarty was found guilty of two Class B misdemeanor counts of Abuse of Official Capacity. Monday he was sentenced to six months in jail, probated for two years, and assessed a $2,000 fine. He was allowed by the judge to remain in office while his appeal is under way. Tuesday morning, Commissioner McCarty said the last week or so had given him much time to reflect, and he promised to continue doing his job for his community.
FLNB: First Liberty National Bank is expanding its community services to Hardin and Huffman. Today, FLNB is opening its full banking Hardin location on the corner of SH 146 and FM 834. Hours of operation are M-F from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. A grand opening celebration is set for May 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. First Liberty National Bank President and CEO Kelly Stretcher also announced the planned acquisition of an existing bank location in Huffman. Public notices for that will appear in Huffman media this week. FLNB’s main bank is on the courthouse square in Liberty and has been in business for more than 100 years. They also have a complete banking location on Hwy 90 in Dayton and an ATM only location on Main at Jefferson Drive in Liberty.
Softball Playoffs: Three South Liberty County high school softball teams are in the state playoffs. The Hardin Lady Hornets face Wallis Brazos in the Bi-District round this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at neutral site - Porter High School. Turning to Liberty, the Lady Panthers take on Houston Yates Friday at 5 p.m. here in Liberty. The Dayton girls’ softball team has a best-of-three series versus Nederland. Game 1 is Thursday at 6 p.m. at Nederland. Game 2 is Friday at 5 p.m. in Dayton. Game 3, if needed, is Friday at 7 p.m., also at Dayton High School.
Good Citizens: The Libertad Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution has presented six local students with awards honoring their community service. This year’s Good Citizen honors go to Zachary Barrett of Hardin High School, Erica Morin of Liberty and Anjali Dalwadi from Cleveland. Also Brandon Johnson from Hull-Daisetta High School, Wesley Till of Dayton and Ellie Rau of Tarkington.
