McCarty Sentencing: Liberty County Pct. 1 Commissioner Mike McCarty will be sentenced this afternoon by visiting Judge Joe Ned Dean in the 75th District Court. Mike McCarty was found guilty by a jury Friday evening on two lesser Class B Misdemeanor counts of Abuse of Official Capacity. The punishment range on each count is six months or less in jail and a fine of $2,000 or less. Commissioner McCarty will also be ordered removed from office. Both the prosecution and defense said they are looking into the law regarding the possibility of that order being put on hold by an appeal from the defense.
Early Voting: Early voting for all city and school elections starts today and continues through May 2. Some have been cancelled with no opposition, but there are a number of elections being held in Liberty County on Sat., May 6. There is one contested race in the Liberty school district between D-Ann Berry and Daniel Balch for Position 5 trustee. The city of Ames has two contested races. Mayor John White is challenged by Emmitt O’Donald Albro while Position 1 incumbent David Papillion is facing Veronica Williams Mallet. Moving on to the Dayton school board election, Adam Piserelle and Josh Day are vying for Position 4 while Kerry Bartee, Barry Pruitt and Lisa Rayburn Butcher are running for DISD Trustee Position 7. The Cleveland school district is holding an $80 million bond election. Also holding elections are the city of Cleveland, City of Devers and Devers school district plus the city of Plum Grove. There’s also a Liberty County Local Option Election on May 6 to allow for the sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed drinks, within the boundaries of Liberty County JP Precinct 3. Voting times and places vary, so check with your local government’s administrative office for details or tune in to KSHN FM 99.9.
Clark Sentenced: Michael Wayne Clark Sr., 40, has been sentenced to jail after pleading guilty Friday to both aggravated sexual assault of a child and bail jumping. The defendant appeared before 75th District Court Judge Mark Morefield. Clark was sentenced to 15 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for aggravated sexual assault of a child. Michael Clark Sr. also got 5 years for bail jumping.
