Bellamy Scholars: For the 36th year, First Liberty National bank, Trustee of the Dr. Richard C. and Esther Bellamy Educational Trust has announced four recipients for scholarships. Each student will receive $11,000 to be funded at $2750 per year. Those recipients in alphabetical order are: John Michael Bartee Jr, Dayton; Alayna Madison Bautsch, Hull-Daisetta; Kamryn Julianne Parker, Liberty; and Jesse Daniel Reyes; Hardin. That’s a total of $1.8 million to 220 students over the 36 years of Bellamy Trust students.

McCarty Trial: The fate of Liberty County Pct. 1 Commissioner Mike McCarty is expected to be in the hands of a jury today. Closing arguments are scheduled for this morning in the 75th District Court. McCarty is charged with two counts of Abuse of Official Capacity. Yesterday, five defense witnesses took the stand, including Commissioner McCarty who testified in his own defense. Also testifying were Mike’s wife, Danella, and his daughter, Katherine.

Earth Day: Here’s a reminder about the free Earth Day Event this Saturday April 22nd at the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. The fun-filled annual event is at Champion Lake, south of Dayton and will feature a variety of activities designed to promote the great outdoors. Champion Lake is located at the end County Road 417 off FM 1409. That turnoff is 10 miles south of U. S. 90 in Dayton and clearly marked with signage. Admission is free and everyone is encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
