McCarty Trial: Jury selection in the trial for Liberty County Commissioner Pct. 1 Mike McCarty, on two counts of Abuse of Official Capacity, is set to begin today in the third-floor 75th District courtroom. Visiting Judge Joe Ned Dean from Trinity County will be presiding. We reported back in June 2015 that Mike McCarty had been indicted by a Liberty County Grand Jury. Mr. McCarty was elected commissioner in November 2012 and was sworn-in to that office in January 2013. He gained re-election in 2016 while under indictment and continues to serve. Both indictments allege the illegal activities for which he is charged took place between Jan. 1, 2013, and Jan. 1, 2015.

Tax Extension: Tomorrow is the last day to file a 2016 federal income tax return or to file for an extension without penalty or interest. Liberty CPA Byron Swaim said the IRS will grant you a six-month extension to file your return without asking why. While you should still estimate and pay whatever tax you may owe, Mr. Swaim reminds taxpayers that the penalty for not filing is more severe than the penalty for not paying. The filing extension application – IRS Form 4868 - is available online at www.irs.gov. As long as it is postmarked by tomorrow’s date – April 18th – you will avoid late filing penalties.

Easter Egg Hunt: It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning as a large crowd gathered for the 34th annual KSHN Easter Egg Hunt in Liberty Municipal Park. Kids 9 and under scrambled for nearly 5,000 candy-filled plastic eggs plus the 90 prize eggs scattered about the large hunt area. Then, there were those three grand prize eggs. Andrea Ruiz, a student at Liberty Elementary School, was the first grand prize winner in line. Given the choice, she picked the Easter bunny carry a $75 gift card to GameStop. The next big winner was Kevin Del Rio, also of Liberty. He walked away with a bright red State Farm wagon provided by local agent Victor Barranco. The third large prize egg was found by 4-year-old Mylee Elsik of Pasadena. She rode away on a bicycle with training wheels and a safety helmet.
