Deputy Vehicle Hit: A Liberty County Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle was rear-ended around midnight Friday on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 90 between Liberty and Dayton. There were two deputy patrol vehicles stopped on the side of the roadway with lights activated assisting a tow truck. That’s when a car operated by a 29-year-old Liberty woman plowed into the rear of one of those patrol vehicles. Deputy Taylor Webb reportedly heard squealing tires and saw the car coming directly toward his vehicle. He quickly shoved Deputy George Daniels out of the way before jumping to safety himself. The woman, whose last name was said to be Heywood, was taken by ground ambulance to a Baytown hospital with what were thought to be non-life threatening injuries. No word on charges, but we were told a blood draw was requested for testing purposes.
Murder Trials: There are two murder trials starting today in the Liberty County Courthouse. David Earl Mitchell Jr. of the Raywood area is facing a jury in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield. He is accused in the May 2014 shooting death of Spencer Allen Sharp on C.R. 175 near Raywood. Then, in an unrelated case, Roberto Ismael Alvarado of Cleveland is being tried in the 253rd District Court of Judge Chap Cain. He is the alleged getaway driver in a shooting of a clerk at an Exxon convenience store on FM 2025 back in December 2015. The victim was 40-year-old Conbino Crasto - best known as ‘Bino”. At the time, Cleveland police said three suspects entered the store where they shot and killed Mr. Crasto before stealing cash.
LHS Choir: Liberty High School Choir received sweepstakes honors at last week’s UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. That means the LHS Choir received three first division ratings in concert and three first-division ratings in sight-reading. Liberty High School’s choir director is Christie Bean.
Chamber Lunch: The Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly noon luncheon is this Wednesday in the Liberty Center at City Hall. Guest speaker is Regina Johnson, a supervisor with Workforce Solutions. She will discuss a youth internship work program. The $10 luncheon will be catered by Linda Durio.
