May 6 Elections: With slightly more than two weeks remaining in the candidate filing period for the May 6 city, school board and hospital district elections, there are still no contested local races. Taking a look at the Dayton school board race, three positions are up for election. To date, two candidates have filed. Longtime Dayton school trustee Thomas Payne has not yet signed up to run again for Position 3 nor has anyone else. Position 4 Incumbent Bob Pickle has said he does not intend to seek a new term in May. Adam Pisarelli is the only candidate so far to enter that race for Dayton school trustee #4. Appointed Position #7 DISD board member Kerri Bartee has filed to run for the time remaining on Jim Smesny’s unexpired term following his resignation. She has no opposition so far. The candidate filing period continues through Friday, February 17.
Brotherhood Banquet: There’s still time to get tickets for this year’s 91st Annual Men’s Brotherhood Banquet at First United Methodist Church of Liberty. It’s two weeks from today – Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker is two-time Radio and Television Hall of Fame Broadcaster Matt Patrick. The local men’s Brotherhood Banquet was first held in 1927 and has continued - without interruption – since then. That makes this storied Liberty gathering the oldest continuously held event, of its kind, in America. Tickets for the traditional turkey and dressing banquet are $10 and available from the church office or from any member of the Methodist Men’s Bible Class. For tickets or information, call 936-336-6401.
Dayton Chamber Lunch: Dayton Chamber of Commerce’s monthly noon luncheon is next Tuesday in the Dayton Community Center. This month’s guest speaker is Tracey Prothro with the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center in Baytown. The $15 meal is being catered by Fish Tales. Everyone is invited to arrive at 11:30 a.m. for networking among Chamber members. For information or reservations, call the Dayton Chamber during business hours at 936-257-2393.
Obituaries: Jo Ann Collier Fregia, 78, of Daisetta. Service is 10 a.m. today at Faith & Family. Rev. Robert “Robby” Hamlin Robinson, of Livingston, formerly of Liberty. Service 11 a.m. today at FUMC or Livingston (Cochran).
