Property Taxes Due: Pproperty owners have until close of business tomorrow to pay property taxes without penalty. Liberty County Tax Collector Ricky Brown said all 2016 property taxes not paid by that date will incur a 7% penalty. The main tax office is on the first floor - Travis Street side - of the Liberty County Courthouse. The Cleveland Annex is at 304 Campbell Street. The County Annex in Dayton is on FM 1960. Taxpayers can also make property tax payments online. Access the Liberty County tax office’s website from www.kshn.com – just click on the government tab under local information.

Elections: So far only the incumbents with expiring terms on the Dayton and Liberty city councils have filed to run in the May 6 election. In Liberty, three seats will be on the ballot. Incumbents Dennis Beasley, Diane Huddleston and Libby Simonson have all filed for new terms on Liberty City Council. To date, they are unopposed. In the City of Dayton, Mayor Jeff Lambright and council members John Johnson and Troy Barton all have expiring council terms. All three of those incumbents have made their run for re-election official and, at last report, have no opposition. The candidate filing period for May 6 elections continues weekdays through Friday, February 17. Candidates can file at their respective city, school district or hospital district administration offices during regular business hours.

Girls Basketball: The Dayton Lady Broncos and Barbers Hill Lady Eagles basketball teams continue to dominate. In last week’s statewide Class 5A poll, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches ranked the Lady Eagles sixth in Texas while the Lady Broncos were 21st statewide. The state-ranked, next-door neighbors face off in the final District 21-5A contest of the regular season a week from tomorrow. That game tips off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 7, in Dayton.
