Property Tax: Property owners have until close of business this coming Tuesday, January 31, to pay property taxes without penalty. Liberty County Tax Collector Ricky Brown said all 2016 property taxes not paid by that date will incur a 7 percent penalty. The main tax office is on the first floor - Travis Street side - of the Liberty County Courthouse. The Cleveland Annex is located at 304 Campbell Street. Both of those offices are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then from 1 till 4:30. The County Annex in Dayton is on FM 1960. It is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to noon and then from 1 till 4:30. For more information, call the tax office at 936-336-4636.

LISD Top Teachers: Liberty ISD has announced this school year’s Teacher of the Year and Paraprofessional of the Year recipients from each of the district’s four campuses. San Jacinto Elementary Teacher of the Year is Charlotte Greineisen. Top educator at LES is Ashley Roberts. Recognized from Liberty Middle School is Silas Hare. Teacher of the Year at LHS is Justin Aldridge. Liberty school district’s paraprofessional honors go to Susie Patton from SJE and DeDe Moorman at LES. Top paraprofessional at LMS is Ruby Fregia. At Liberty High School, the Paraprofessional of the Year is Leah Smith.

Election: In the City of Dayton, Mayor Jeff Lambright and Council members John Johnson and Troy Barton all have expiring city council terms. Dayton Council Position #4 Incumbent John Johnson made his run for a new term official Wednesday.

Liberty City Council: At their meeting Tuesday, the Liberty City Council approved a resolution requesting action by the Texas Department of Transportation on safety and speed issues on State Hwy 146 North of the Bypass in Liberty. The resolution cites population growth in the area immediately north of Liberty over the past 20 years that has created traffic hazards there and requests changes be made to make the roadway safer by lowering the speed limit. The creation of turning lanes and traffic signals was also suggested to TxDOT.
