Sheriff's Budget Explained: Last week we reported on the proposed county budget for fiscal year 2015. In our initial story, we reported on the apparent cut of $279,000 in the budget for the Liberty County Sheriffs Department. While on the surface, that appears to be the case, we have further clarification from Liberty County Auditor Harold Seay. During the fiscal year 2014, a one-time transfer of $500,000 was made by commissioners to the sheriff's office. That transfer was, according to Harold Seay, a one-time bump in the sheriff's department Capital Outlay and not a permanent addition to the annual budget. For this year, the capital outlay budget of the Liberty County Sheriffs' Department has again been reduced to the previous level. The 2014 budget without the one-time payment of $500,000 was $5.4 million. The proposed 2015 budget is $5.6 million, an overall increase over last year's budget.

LISD Budget Workshop: Liberty school trustees held a budget workshop Tuesday evening in preparation for adopting the 2014-15 budget. During that meeting, school trustees directed district staff to follow some of those Texas Association of School Board recommendations for staff pay. The TASB model being used by LISD in the budget calls for a 5.97 % overall increase in the teacher pay structure and a 4 % increase for other staff. Liberty school board next meets on August 19. At that meeting, LISD trustees will officially adopt a tax rate, compensation plan and a final budget for FY 2015.
