Deputies: The case of Liberty County Deputies whose pay is so low, it qualifies them for food stamps, has gained national attention. Currently the annual salary for a deputy at the department is $36,800. Liberty County Commissioner Mike McCarty said he would need more information before he felt comfortable making any decision about the pay scale at the sheriffs department. The Precinct 1 Commissioner said he would like to have a meeting with Sheriff Bobby Rader, and said he felt that a special called commissioners court meeting or workshop would be set up soon. Liberty County Judge Craig McNair was out of state and unavailable. Other county officials indicated they felt it was unlikely that the sheriff would receive his budget request to increase the deputies base salaries.  It has also been pointed out Liberty County currently operates on a budget that is deficit by $2.8 million.
