Commissioners: During yesterday’s meeting, Liberty County Commissioners voted to name the new Liberty County Community Center the “Jack Hartel Building”. The Hartel family was in attendance for the unanimous vote. Commissioners also voted to keep the salaries and allowances of elected officials for next years’ budget unchanged from this year’s levels. Commissioners accepted a gift of approximately 5 acres of land on CR 370 in the north end of the county. Commissioner Pct. 3 Eddie Lowery said the land would be used by the Liberty County Sheriffs Department, area fire department, and emergency medical services.

Burglary: The Liberty Police Department is investigating the early morning burglary of Millers Shell convenience store in Liberty. City police were able to catch one suspect, 18 year old Zuri Warfield of Houston. During the investigation they discovered that three men broke into the store and left on foot with approximately 80 packs of cigarettes. Police were able to recover and return the property. Zuri Warfield was jailed charged with burglary of a building. Anyone with information about the two others is asked to call (936) 336 5666.

Bookmobile Donation: Liberty ISD launched its new summer reading bookmobile last week with 91 kids taking home books to read on the first two days of the program. LISD Superintendent Dr. Cody Abshier said the bookmobile got an added boost from the recent donation of books, the latest gift coming from Hardin Independent School District. Tomorrow the bookmobile will be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Liberty. Then, next Tuesday, the bookmobile will stop at Lily of the Valley Baptist Church on South Liberty Oilfield Road.

Commission: The Texas Historical Commission has honored the local Liberty County Historical Commission with their Distinguished Service Award for the 2013 year of service. *************************************************

Obituaries: Jewel Catherine Davis, 92 of Anahuac. Service Friday at 2 p.m. at Bon Wier Pentecostal Church in Bon Wier, Texas. Patsy Darlene Wiggins Ulkie, 63 of Dayton. No public service is planned.
