Accidental Shooting: An accidental shooting on Friday sent 57-year-old Jerry D. Burns by air ambualnce to Hermann Hospital in Houston with a gun-shot wound to the left jaw. The Liberty County Sheriffs department reports Mr. Burns was putting a trigger safety lock on his .22 caliber rifle. He dropped the gun, but because the trigger lock was actually made for a pistol and did not fit properly, the rifle discharged. The .22 caliber long rifle bullet struck Burns in the jaw and did not exit. Jerry Burns was taken to the Houston hospital in what is thought to be stable condition.

WVFD Woes 2: We’ve been reporting on an ongoing dispute between the Westlake Community Volunteer Fire Department and their Liberty County Emergency Services District #3. Representatives of the fire department say they are out of money and unable to pay for vehicle insurance to operate their fire-fighting equipment. However, at a meeting last Wednesday night, Emergency Services District #3 Board President Tonia Reed read a prepared statement that said the ESD has paid insurance premiums through October 2014 and that insurance has never lapsed. Reed said that her board paid insurance is through the Texas Municipal league, which covers the Westlake trucks, firefighters, ESD #3 board members, property and buildings. The insurance remains in force but still they want a legal contract with the volunteer fire department. So far no such contract has been agreed to. Â
