Volume 29, No. 112 Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Commissioners: The subject of who runs the Liberty County Jail was the topic of much discussion during yesterday's meeting of Liberty County Commissioners. Liberty County Judge Craig McNair gave his explanation by saying commissioners had kicked that can down the road long enough. The judge first made a motion to discuss the issue, for which he received no second from any of the three commissioners in attendance. Commissioner Pct. 3 Charlotte Warner was out. There is no requirement to second a motion for discussion. Judge McNair said he felt another study would do no good, because those conducting those studies have no vested interest in the county. The county judge suggested they interview potential jail administrators, and they could tell commissioners if the county should take back operations of the jail, or leave it with an outside company. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader asked, if the "jail administrator" decides the jail should remain with an outside source, what was he to do? Fire them? Liberty County Judge Craig McNair said the suggestion on what to do, would come from the applicants themselves, before they became employees of the county. The discussion lasted for about an hour prior to the county judge making the motion to return the operations of the jail to the Liberty Co. Sheriff. That motion failed due to lack of a second as did other motions by Judge McNair. We will have more tomorrow.
