Drug Arrest: A Houston man has been charged with selling marijuana in a drug free zone at the Mayhaw Festival carnival. The Daisetta Police Department, along with the Pct. 2 and 4 Liberty County constables’ offices, received a tip that a carnival employee was selling illegal narcotics at the carnival carousel in the parking lot of Hull-Daisetta High School. Officers set up surveillance and gathered evidence. That led to the arrest of a carnival employee, identified as Benjamin Ross Courtney, age 36. He faces a charge of delivery of marijuana, less than or equal to ¼ ounce for sale in a drug free zone.  At last report, Courtney remained in Liberty County Jail with bail set at $10,000.

LibertyPolice Station: The City of Liberty’s new police station project continues on schedule for a late July or early August completion. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said construction of the 10,000-square-foot facility, next to the fire department on Lakeland Drive, is moving ahead rapidly. It’s a $2.6 million project with $1.1 million being covered by federal grant funds, mostly Hurricane Ike recovery money.

Kid Safety: With temperatures topping 90 degrees before summer arrives, it’s a good time to remember the dangers of leaving children in vehicles unattended. Since 1998, some 605 children across the United States have died from heatstroke while unattended in a vehicle. Liberty County AgriLife Extension Agent Alexis Cordova said unattended cars heat up quickly – 19 degrees in just 10 minutes. With that in mind, never leave children unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute.
