City Break-In: Liberty police quickly recovered some property stolen Saturday morning from the city’s maintenance and service center on North Main Street. Det. Chip Fairchild said most of the property was recovered, thanks to an alert City of Liberty employee who noticed the break-in and followed the vehicle to obtain a license plate number. Police located the truck later that day and received a search warrant for a room at the Liberty Inn where they located the stolen property. Jack Owens, 38, of Hardin, was arrested on a pervious warrant for felony theft. Police are also looking for Shawn Jordan, 34, of Hardin, on an outstanding warrant. Det. Fairchild said warrants for both men related to Saturday’s break-in could be issued as early as today.

HISD Considers Petition: The Hardin school board meets in regular session tonight at 7 in the administration annex. They will consider the petition from property owners to detach a portion of Hardin ISD for annexation by the Liberty school district. The area proposed for annexation has, for decades, been inside the city limits of Liberty but is part of the Hardin school district. If Hardin trustees reject the petition, it will go before the Texas Education Commissioner for a tie-breaking decision since the Liberty school board has already voted to accept it.

Capital Murder: A Liberty County Grand Jury has indicted 29-year-old Brian Christopher Keith of Hardin for Capital Murder of a person less than 10 years of age. Back on July 2, 2013, little four-week-old Nevaeh Keith was found unresponsive in her bed on C.R. 2061 and later pronounced deceased. Autopsy results indicate the baby died by compression death, which is, in effect, death due to blunt trauma to the body.

Roadwork: Work is expected to begin today to widen FM 1008 from 22 to 28 feet by adding three-foot shoulders to the existing roadway. The effort will stretch 7.3 miles, beginning five miles south of S.H. 321 and ending between Kenefick and Dayton. TxDOT urges drivers to use caution and watch for road crews.
