Election Results: Unofficial results from yesterday’s Republican Primary election have incumbent County Judge Craig McNair in a runoff with challenger Jay Knight.  That vote total was McNair - 2,841, Jay Knight - 2,316, and Todd Fontenot - 1,552. In the race for Commissioner Precinct 2, Greg Arthur got 1,289 votes to unseat incumbent Charlotte Warner with 939. Turning to Commissioner Precinct 4, incumbent Norman Brown garnered 625 votes while Leon Wilson got 533; a runoff is expected. As for the district clerk GOP race, incumbent Donna Brown won with 3,717 votes to challenger Brenda McManus Jones’ 2,922. In the race for state rep. Dist. 18, John Otto held a commanding lead with 70 % of the vote in Liberty County.


House Fire: Fire damaged a two-story home in Liberty yesterday afternoon. It was shortly after 1 p.m. when Liberty firefighters were called to the home of Jerry and Lala Robbins at 2223 Beaumont Avenue across from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department. Liberty Fire Chief Fred Collins said the cause of the blaze was a short in the electrical wiring between floors of the two-story duplex. Chief Collins said damage was fairly minor with smoke, water and some structural damage, mostly confined to the upper floor and attic.  


DaytonLiquor Election: Dayton City Council met Tuesday and officially accepted a petition to hold a local election to let voters determine if the city should allow the sale of liquor by the drink and packaged liquor stores. Dayton council set an election for November 4. That date coincides with the General Election, the earliest possible date as set forth in the state’s election code.


Road Work: Texas Department of Transportation recently approved $2.4 million for construction repairs on Loop 573 in Cleveland. Smith and Company was awarded the project that will make needed repairs to the stretch of roadway between US 59 South and US 59 North. Officials say construction should begin in May and take about four months to complete.


Obituaries: Emma Louise Taylor, 78, of Liberty. Service is 2 p.m. today at Assembly of God Church in Daisetta. Larry “Joe” Lee, 73, of Hardin. Service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
