Volume 29, No. 30 Thursday, February 13, 2014

Thief gets 20 Years: A Houston area man, Donovan Jamal Edmonds, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.  We reported in August 2012, that Edmonds was one of four men, all from the Houston area, arrested and charged with an early morning break-in at the Liberty Radio Shack store located in the Wal-Mart Shopping Center on the Hwy 146 Bypass. A jury in Judge Mark Morefield’s 75thDistrict Courtroom found Edmonds guilty on Tuesday. The defendant requested to be sentenced by Judge Morefield. Due to Donovan Edmonds’ numerous prior felony convictions the judge sentenced him to 20 years. The three other Houston area men are also charged with burglary of a building, but have not yet gone to trial.

Car Seat Recall: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a voluntary recall of toddler and booster child seats produced by Graco, a brand that is sold locally. Graco Children’s Products is recalling model year ’09 through 2013 in several models. The alleged defect involves difficulty in unlatching the harness buckle, resulting in what may be difficulty in removing the child from the restraint that increased risk of injury when a prompt exit from the vehicle is required. For info, owners can call Graco at (800)345-4109.

Candidates: Incumbent Liberty City Councilman Frank Jordan has filed to run for a new two-year term. He joins fellow incumbents David Arnold and Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett on the ballot in May. Council member Louie Potetz has not yet indicated if he will file for re-election. In the Dayton School Board election, Trustees Thomas Payne and Bob Pickle have both filed to run for new terms. Position #4 incumbent Bob Pickle is opposed by Pamela Montgomery. To date, those are the only candidates to file for Dayton School Board. Candidate filing for all city, school and hospital district elections continues through Friday February 28th.

Closed for Presidents Day: All municipal offices in the cities of Cleveland, Dayton and Liberty will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day. The Liberty County Courthouse, banks and post offices will also be closed Monday. Waste Management Garbage Services will run as scheduled in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland on Monday.
