Volume 29, No. 24 Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Commissioners Court: During yesterday’s commissioners court meeting, commissioners approved financing $1.5 million for equipment upgrades to county buildings. That is part of the overall $2.2 million contract with the Way Company for cost-saving utility infrastructure upgrades. The contract with the Way Company allows the county to recoup money if the upgrade project fails to pay for itself.

Highway 90 Expansion: We reported last year on plans for widening U.S. 90 from S.H. 61 at Devers eastward to FM 1009 near the Felicia Dryer. Now, work is under way to clear land and move utilities along that 5.4 mile stretch in preparation for the actual roadwork. When completed, Highway 90 will be four lanes from S.H. 61 all the way to Beaumont with an extra turn lane through Devers. The $21 million project was awarded to APAC-Texas and will take about three years to complete.

Radio Auction: Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center’s Fifth Annual Radio Auction is on KSHN Radio tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. and again Saturday from shortly after 9 a.m. until noon. Volunteers will be describing, on the air, a variety of items and services to bid on by telephone. Items include sports memorabilia, gift certificates to local businesses, meals at area restaurants, collectibles, a computer, a cooker, and many, many more. Money raised helps support Bridgehaven’s mission of giving hope and care to children in Liberty and Chambers counties who are victims of physical and/or sexual abuse.

ClevelandISD: We reported Cleveland School Superintendent Kerry Cowart resigned last week. That resignation was effective immediately, and at last report, negotiations were under way for Cleveland ISD to buy out the remainder of his contract. The district is not commenting on Cowart’s resignation since it’s a personnel matter overseen by the Cleveland school board. CISD Board President Chris Wood has not responded to our attempts to contact him.
