LISD Board Election: Liberty Independent School District trustees have called an election for May 10 to elect two board members with expiring three-year terms. Those trustees with expiring terms are President Brandon Smith and Trustee Matt Harris. We have reported extensively on the recent board decision that now has LISD trustees elected by-position. Liberty school board members drew for that position Tuesday night. The two trustee positions up for reelection this time are place 5 with incumbent Brandon Smith and Position 1, currently held by Matt Harris. The filing period for candidates interested in being a trustee for the Liberty school board is Jan. 29th– Feb. 28th.

Grant Money for Sam Center: The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center in Liberty has received a second $6,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to improve storage conditions at the local facility. Manager Alana Inman said those federal funds will be used in the coming months to install sun control film on windows, water detection alarms and additional monitors to track temperature and humidity levels through the center’s storage areas.

DCDC Grant on Hold: A deal to bring a new manufacturer to Dayton is on hold. In mid 2013, the Dayton City Council approved a $400,000 Dayton Community Development Corporation grant for Jet Products. That’s a company that makes a siding similar to “hardi-plank”. Dayton City Manager David Douglas said the Jet representatives and the Gulf Inland Logistics Park owners could not reach an agreement. David Douglas said now talks are between Jet and the Agri-Bio Fuels Company also in Dayton. So, chances of Jet Products locating here still exists. The D.C.D.C. grant is on hold.

Winter Weather: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of Southeast Texas. Across the watch area ice accumulations of .05 to .15 inch are expected, but may be adjusted. The NWS says the arctic front is still expected to move across southeast Texas on Thursday with temperatures falling into the 30s and 40s behind the front.

Obituaries: Carroll Davis Mize, 68 of Dayton. Service Saturday 10 a.m. at Heights Baptist Church in Liberty.
