Fire: Yesterday’s high winds pushed a grass fire to consume more than 30 acres before fire fighters had it out. Four mostly volunteer fire departments, Moss Bluff, Hull-Daisetta, Liberty and Dayton, all were called to the fire that started near CR 137 off FM 563 and the flames stretched through pastureland to CR 134 to the south. 30 acres is not a lot but, the fire line was stopped just short of a house on CR 134.

Health Fair: The 3rdAnnual Health Fair at the Dayton Community Center is Thursday, January 30thfrom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community Center Director Amanda Wilson said the event is free to everyone, visitors and vendors. There will be vendors on hand from all areas of health care, according to organizers there will also be an area set aside for a chance to talk with the doctors privately. Burn Ban: Winds and dry conditions Tuesday afternoon, prompted Liberty County Judge Craig McNair to order a ban against open burning in the unincorporated areas of Liberty County.  This ban is in effect for 90 days. If conditions improve, the ban may be lifted sooner. Open burning is always prohibited within the city limits of Cleveland, Dayton and Liberty.

Families Fun Day: Another reminder, this Saturday families of elementary-age students in Liberty, Hardin, Hull-Daisetta, and Barbers Hill are invited to a free Families Fun Day at their respective school districts. Families Fun Day is for elementary age students from 4 to 12 years old and at least one parent, particularly dads. In Liberty call 336-7213. In Hardin call 298 2112. In Hull-Daisetta families call 536 6667 and in Barbers Hill call 281 576 2221.

CitizensPoliceAcademy: The deadline to submit an application to be a part of the Liberty County Citizens Police Academy is this Friday. This course is to begin in early February. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Applications are available from Faye Cutsinger by calling (936) 336 7674 or Vita O’Reilly at (936) 402 3209.  Applications are also available from the Sheriffs Department dispatcher office at 2400 Beaumont Ave. in Liberty.
