ChambersCountyCapital Murder: A Winnie man, Kristopher James Reed, age 23, has been charged with capital murder in the death of his 2-year-old step daughter. Chambers Co. Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said his deputies got a call around 9:15 a.m. Sunday regarding a medical call. When deputies arrived, Reed had left, and EMS was trying to resuscitate the girl. Attempts by medical staff at Winnie Community Hospital were unsuccessful. Later, Reed was found, questioned, and charged with the murder and jailed. He is being held on $1,000,00 bond.  The investigation continues.

Branch Explains Shelter Purpose: Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch said the newly completed Liberty county Community Center and Emergency Shelter has never been intended to serve as a shelter for the general public. Tom Branch said in a large scale disaster such as a hurricane or other disaster, the center will house only first responders. When the County Community Center is not in use for emergencies, it will be available for rent to the public for special events in the same way as the Dayton Community Center and Cleveland Civic Centers are now. No word on charges or policies.

HoustonMarathon: Thirty-seven Liberty County runners crossed the finish line in the annual Chevron Houston Marathon Sunday. Topping the field of local contenders was 47-year-old Robert Dunn of Liberty. He ran the long distance course in 3:21:21. Not far behind him was 35-year-old Miranda Smart of Dayton. She crossed the finish line in 3:34:38.  Other local marathoners who completed the 26.2 mile course were Patric Elders, 54 and Shannon Smith, 45 – both of Liberty. From Cleveland were 44-year-old Paige Bostwick, 56-year-old Doug Bugner, 39 year-old Jason Naranjo, 31 year-old Joyce Rice and 47-year-old Paul Simmons. Rounding out the group of locals to finish was Perry Cessna, 28 of Hardin.
