House Fire: A two-story home and most of its contents were destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. Hardin Volunteer Fire Chief Craig Powell said firefighters from Hardin, Hull-Daisetta, Saratoga, Tarkington and Liberty battled the blaze on C.R. 2070 north of Moss Hill off of S.H. 105. Homeowner is Mervin Collins. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but officials suspect a heat lamp for pets on the back porch.

Condemnation Hearing: We’ve reported on efforts by City of Liberty to gain ownership of property along the route of a planned road from the Highway 146 by-pass to Lakeland Drive. That new street would open up some 300 acres to development. Last Wednesday, the City of Liberty and the remaining unresolved property owners along the route met in a special hearing to have three commissioners, appointed by Liberty County Court-at-Law Judge Tommy Chambers, resolve a price dispute in a condemnation hearing. Commissioners set a price above what the city was offering but well below what landowner’s called for. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said Liberty Community Development Corporation and City Council have already approved the purchase price and transferred the commissioner-set price of $139,095 into a trust handled by the court. The landowners have 20 days from January 8 to accept that price awarded by commissioners. If they chose to appeal the price, it would go before a Liberty County Court-at-Law jury.

Fire Warning: Liberty County Fire Marshall Jim Wilson urges caution with outdoor burning. He said because of dry conditions and high winds, area residents should avoid burning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. He also urges those who do burn to stay with the fire. Of course, outdoor burning is prohibited in major incorporated areas like Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland.
