Wreck Victim Identified: Liberty city police have identified the victim of Monday’s fatality crash as 43-year-old Melba Jean Campbell of Hankamer. Liberty Police Det. Jennifer Bowles also reports one person was arrested in connection with the wreck. Det. Bowles said 26-year-old Javier Garcia-Robles of Mexico City was westbound on Hwy. 90 in a bobtail truck when he ran a red light and struck Campbell’s SUV, which was turning off the bypass eastbound onto Hwy. 90. Javier Garcia-Robles was taken to the Liberty County Jail, charged with criminally negligent homicide. Bond has been set at $25,000.

Stray Animals in County: A local resident spoke before Liberty County Commissioners Court Tuesday morning calling for the establishment of animal control efforts in the unincorporated areas. County resident Charles George said stray dogs are a threat to public safety and health. He called on commissioners to approve an animal control officer to deal with – what he called – a growing problem. Liberty County Judge Craig McNair said it is a problem that has been discussed among commissioners and he favors working with area cities through an inter-local agreement. The agenda item did not call for action, but commissioners did seem in agreement that stray animals are a problem countywide and steps need to be taken.

Texas’ 36thCongressional District includes Liberty, Chambers, Hardin, Orange, Polk, Tyler, Newton and Jasper counties plus a portion of Harris County.
