Cleveland Rape Case: We have already reported the last of the 21 defendants in the notorious Cleveland gang rape case was sentenced to prison earlier this month. Liberty County District Attorney Logan Pickett said as this unfortunate chapter in the county’s history is closed, he wants to provide area residents with some insight into the criminal justice system and how it worked in this case. He said prosecutors sought to protect the 11-year-old child victim while taking into account the strength of evidence in each case. They also reviewed each defendant’s criminal history along with their acceptance of responsibility and willingness to cooperate with the investigation. D.A. Pickett said he believes prosecutors fulfilled their obligation and justice was served. Now the district attorney hopes the healing process can begin as this chapter in the county’s history is closed.

House Fire: The Moss Bluff home of Lewis Swoke and his brother was destroyed by fire Thursday night while the two men were out of town working. Three motorcycles along with all of the home’s contents were also destroyed.

Manslaughter Charge: Michael Gary Shannon III, 22, has been arrested in connection with the traffic death of a 2-year-old child back on May 23, 2011. Originally charged with failure to control speed, the 22-year-old Hull resident has now been charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and aggravated assault. While Michael Shannon III was indicted last month, the grand jury action was sealed until he was in custody last week.

Football: The Dayton Broncos got a thrilling late-game district victory over the Barbers Hill Eagles Friday night. With just 27 seconds left in the game, the Broncos took the lead on a fourth-down, eight-yard touchdown pass for a 23-20 win. Turning to Class 3A, the Coldspring Trojans rolled past the Liberty Panthers 60-21. In other action, it was Hardin over Warren 20-14 while Hull-Daisetta downed Iola 49-32. Huffman over Shepherd 21-7. Splendora squeaked by Tarkington 35-34. Newtown blasted Anahuac 62-27, and East Chambers topped Kountze 31-26. Cleveland had an open week.
