Mas Amigos: It’s been about a month since the popular Mexican restaurant – Mas Amigos in Liberty – closed its doors without explanation. Through freedom of information requests, KSHN has learned the City of Liberty turned off utilities to that restaurant on Sept. 10 after a utility payment check for $6,105 bounced. In addition, a lawsuit has been filed for failure to pay property taxes in excess of $28,000, and their phone lines have been disconnected. No word if Mas Amigos on North Main Street in Liberty will get those bills paid and reopen.

LISD Election: Early voting ends tomorrow in the Liberty school district’s Tax Ratification Election set for this Saturday, October 12. Early voting in the LISD election is today and tomorrow from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m.in the Liberty City Council Chambers at City Hall. There are also extended voting opportunities both days. That’s today at Liberty High School and tomorrow at San Jacinto Elementary from 5 to 7 each night.

Voter Registration: Today is the deadline to register to vote in the state’s constitutional amendment election on November 5. The City of Liberty will also have an election that day on the sale of alcoholic beverages within the city limits. For info on registering, call the voter registrar’s office during business hours in Liberty at 936-336-8683 or in Cleveland at 281-592-3571.

Cross Country: The 29thAnnual Liberty Invitational Cross Country Meet is in the books with more than 1,000 runners taking part. Liberty Cross Country Coach Joe Roberts hailed Saturday’s meet a big success, thanks to the 38 schools that participated and those individuals from Liberty ISD, the City of Liberty and the local community who lent a helping hand.

Football: The Dayton Broncos are now 3-3 overall after falling to Kingwood Park 24-17 Thursday night. In Friday night action, it was Huffman-Hargrave downing Liberty 31-14. The Panthers are now 1-4 on the season. In other action, Anahuac topped Hardin 55-19 while Halletsville Sacred Heart beat Hull-Daisetta 41-21. On Saturday, it was Barbers Hill over Humble 31-7.
