Wreck Causes Power Outage: A hit-and-run accident on Main Street at Grand Avenuein Liberty late Friday night left that area of the city without power for about 10 hours. Liberty police report William King, 41, of Dayton was traveling south on Main when his vehicle hydroplaned. It slammed into a utility pole and struck a pickup stopped on Grand Avenue. Police say King fled the scene. City of Liberty Electric Superintendent Randy Wiggins said the cost to repair damage to city property will be at least $10,000. The accident remains under investigation.

Heavy Rain: KSHN monitors the official rain record for the U.S. Weather Service for south Liberty County. The gauge at KSHN recorded 7.63 inches of rain when totaling readings from Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning. Of that total, 5.15 inches fell during the 24-hour period beginning Thursday afternoon through the same time Friday. The average historical monthly rainfall for September is 5.49 inches.

Burn Ban Lifted: Due to the significant rainfall since Thursday, Liberty County Judge Craig McNair has lifted the outdoor burn ban for the unincorporated areas of the county. Of course, open burning is always prohibited within the city limits of Liberty, Daytonand Cleveland.

Football: Heavy storms and accompanying lightning forced the cancellation of many area high school football games Friday night. Liberty’s game was canceled late in the first quarter. It won’t be rescheduled, but Homecoming activities were moved to Oct. 4. Hardin also canceled and moved Homecoming to Oct. 4. Hull-Daisetta rescheduled for October 17. The Dayton Broncos finished their game in Crosby Friday under rain-soaked conditions. The Cougars came from behind to beat Dayton 33-27.
