Commissioners: LibertyCountyCommissioners met yesterday and made a big announcement at the end of the meeting. Following a brief executive session, commissioners voted to approve an offer to buy the old Wal-Mart building for $800,000. Until the deal is finalized, Liberty County Judge Craig McNair declined to say more. The building has been on the market for several years, with a listing price of $1.8 million. Just prior to yesterday’s meeting, Judge McNair presented a proclamation declaring Friday July 26th, 2013 as Allen Wayne Day in Liberty County in recognition of his 35 years of service to the listeners of KSHN radio. Allen is set to retire on Friday.

DaytonCityCouncil: The Dayton City Council met Monday night and worked through a lengthy agenda. Council approved the bid for new lift station back up generators to McDonalds Electric of Houston for $124,869.  The cost of those two generators is completely covered by state disaster recovery grant funds. In other action, council gave final approval for two Dayton Community Development Corporation grants. The first, for $400,000 is to Jet Products L.L.C. As reported, that company is planning to build a manufacturing and storage facility on Hwy. 146. The second was $25,000 for the Honey Bee Ranch Event Center on Hwy 90 in Dayton.

Paws 4 Love: The Liberty Municipal Library is again hosting a special program for school age children that want to improve their reading skills. The Paws 4 Love Reading Program will be held on two consecutive Thursdays, the first is tomorrow and the second is Thursday August 1. Specially trained registered therapy dogs, plus one cat, along with their owners, will provide supervised reading practice. The program is available from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. All sessions are about 20 minutes and will be allotted on a first come, first served basis.
