Street Extension: A project that has been at the ‘proposal’ stage for some time has taken a giant step closer to becoming a reality by year’s end. At last week’s Liberty Community Development Corporation meeting, Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said he was instructed to do what it takes to get the long-discussed street extension project moving forward. That project would create a thoroughfare linking Lakeland Drive to the Hwy 146 Bypass in order to open up more than 300 acres of surrounding land for development. Once details of financing and engineering agreements have been resolved, Liberty City Council will be asked for their approval of the estimated $4.8 million street extension project.

Hunger Busters: Organizers for the Hunter Busters summer free lunch program say it’s off to a great start. Liberty County AgriLife Extension Agent Alexis Cordova said the program’s volunteers served 9,295 meals, just in the month of June.  The main site is Liberty Middle School. Volunteers also distribute meals at San Jacinto Elementary and under the Liberty Municipal Park pavilion. Other Hunger Buster meal sites include New Work Family Life Center on Grand, Immaculate Conception Church on Milam, St. Miles Baptist Church on Highway 90 in Ames, Lily of the Valley Baptist Church on South Liberty Oilfield Road and at the Liberty County AgriLife Extension Office, 501 Palmer Street. Three sites are no longer serving meals – those are St. John’s Baptist, the VFW Hall and San Jacinto Elementary. Volunteers want to hear from those kids within the Liberty school district who need a meal but are unable to make it to one of those sites. Call Liberty Middle School at 936-336-3592, extension 6.
