Fatality: A one-vehicle motorcycle accident on FM 1409 early Sunday morning claimed the life Russell Eugene Haas, 46, of Highlands. According to a DPS report, Haas was traveling southbound when his motorcycle left the road and struck a utility pole. A passerby reportedly came upon that wreck around 12:40 a.m.Sunday very near the Westlake Volunteer Fire Department.

Prison Sentence: Two men have been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to felony charges before 75thDistrict Court Judge Mark Morefield. Jason Grady Blake III, 49 of Livingston, was sentenced to 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was charged with possession of methamphetamine. Also headed to prison is Oddist Wayne Whitley, 39, of Crosby. He was sentenced to 12 years in TDCJ after pleading guilty to three Liberty County charges – Burglary of a Habitation, Burglary of a Building and Evading Arrest in a Vehicle.

Another Tax Deadline: A reminder – June 30 is the official deadline for property owners to pay any remaining 2012 property taxes without incurring attorney collection costs. Because that date falls on a Sunday this year, taxpayers actually have an extra day until next Monday, July 1, to pay those taxes without attorney fees that can be up to 20 percent. For information, call the Liberty County tax office at 936-336-4633.

Rain Totals: Despite some recent rains, Liberty County continues to lag behind average rainfall totals. From January 1 through June 22, the total rainfall in the City of Liberty is 18.87 inches. Those measurements are taken just off the courthouse square at the KSHN studios – the official site of National Weather Service in Liberty. So, how does that compare to a normal year? The National Weather Service reports the average rainfall for January through June in Liberty is 29.31 inches. That means this year’s rainfall of 18.87 inches, through Saturday, is down about 36 percent from a normal year.
