Suspect in Custody: Liberty County Sheriffs Department reports, Luther Don Whitmire, a suspect in the bank burglary of the Hull State Bank in Hull is now in custody in Calcasieu Parish Louisiana. According to Liberty County Sheriffs Capt. Ken DeFoor he will be extradited back to Texas.

National Honor Society: ¬†Liberty School trustees voted 4-2 to overturn a decision by the high school’s National Honor Society Council.¬† That action means 10 additional LHS students have been admitted to the school’s honor society. The board action comes as the result of grievances filed by three families, including that of Liberty school trustee Bruce Bell. According to one local school administrator, that action prompted all six members of the National Honor Society Council to resign from their duties.

Sales Tax Holiday: The very popular annual back-to-school sales tax holiday is set for August 9-11. That is a week earlier than previous years. The three-day period offers Texas shoppers a chance to save money when buying most children and adult clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks for items priced under $100.

Hunger Busters Continues: Liberty County AgriLife Extension Agent Alexis Cordova said the Hunger Busters Summer Meal program is serving an average of 495 meals each day at eight locations throughout the Liberty school district. Hunger Busters is funded with federal grant money and is administered locally by volunteers and Liberty ISD. Alexis Cordova said serving times vary, based on location, but the target hour for the meals is from 11 a.m. to noon. The main site is Liberty Middle School on Jefferson Drive. Meals are also distributed at the Liberty Municipal Park Pavilion, New Work Family Life Center on Grand Ave, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Milam. Also there are free meals at St. Miles Baptist Church on Hwy. 90 and at Lily of the Valley Baptist Church on S. Liberty Oilfield Road, as well as St. John’s Baptist on far N. Main, and at the Liberty County AgriLife Extension Office on Palmer St.
