Fire: Fire destroyed a three bedroom home in the Kenefick area. It took two fires over two days to totally destroy the home of Shannon Salazar, and his family. The first fire was extinguished in the kitchen area on Sunday, and then in the early hours of Monday, the fire departments were called again. This time the home was engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. Liberty County Fire Marshall Jim Wilson said he was still investigating and until he was through, he would describe the cause of the second fire as questionable.

Commissioners: Liberty County Commissioners took no action on a request by the Dayton Community Development Corporation to grant 100% tax abatement for 10 years on a structure proposed for SH 146 in Dayton. DCDC Executive Director Courtland Holman told commissioners the property owner, Bill Sjolander, was proposing to build a facility to house an urgent care medical facility then lease it to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Dayton officials are negotiating with Memorial Hermann to bring an urgent care facility to Dayton.

Help: The drop off deadline for those wishing to donate non-perishable food items and supplies to the victims of the May 20thtornado in Oklahoma is this Friday at noon. Donors can drop off donations at Sterling Funeral Home on N. Main in Dayton, Allison Funeral Service on N. Travis in Liberty or Sterling-White Funeral Home on FM 2100 in Highlands.

Free Fishing: This Saturday is free fishing day in Texas. Residents and visitors will be able to fish or crab anywhere in the state without a fishing license. Locally, both the Trinity River and Anahuac National Wildlife Refuges will hold events to commemorate the day. At Champion Lake off of FM 1409 on CR 417 there will be a Family Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, FM 563 in Chambers County, they will have hands-on demonstrations and activities.
