Traffic Fatality: 16-year-old Garrett Paul Haidusek of Devers died Saturday from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident. A passenger in that same car, 14-year-old Lucas Carrol Hughes, also of Devers, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. At last report, he was said to be in stable condition with a broken femur. The vehicle’s driver, Ryan Dean Birdwell, 23, was taken to the Liberty County Jail charged with intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault.

Drowning Death:  Saturday afternoon, according to Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor, 16-year-old Megan Spade slipped beneath the water of a pond off CR 3747 while swimming with her siblings. Captain Defoor said the girl’s grandfather pulled the teen from the water and began CPR. She was transported to a Houston hospital. Megan Spade died Sunday around noon after being taken off life support.

Airport Open House: The Liberty Municipal Airport will host a public open house Saturday, June 8, to show off major improvements now complete at the facility. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said those who haven’t seen the refurbished airport will have an opportunity to come, enjoy hamburgers, and have a look. The airport is on FM 2830 at the corner of 160. The easiest access is through the FM 160 gate. The open house starts at 11 a.m. For information, call (936) 336 7361.

Property Value Protests: The deadline for most property owners to file a written notice of protest on their appraised values is this Friday. Chief Appraiser Alan D. Conner said filing a protest can be done in person, by mail, or on the Central Appraisal District’s website. It can be accessed under the government tab at www.kshn.com.
