Volume 28, No. 100 Friday, May 24, 2013

Officer Impersonation: The Liberty County Sheriff’s Department reports a woman was stopped Monday night by a man apparently impersonating law enforcement. Sheriff’s Captain Ken DeFoor said the man wore a uniform type shirt with a badge. Neither fit any of this area’s known uniforms or badges. The car is a dark colored sports type car, possibly a “Charger”. The male is described as a Hispanic male, 5’10” tall and weighed about 220 lbs. He was said to be clean cut with light color eyes.  The Sheriffs department urges, if someone in this type of vehicle attempts to pull you over, drive to a well lit, populated area before coming to a stop. Anyone with information is asked to call the Liberty Co. Sheriffs Department at (936) 336 4500.

Controversy: Liberty High graduating senior Cori Clevenger told trustees Tuesday she is the top academically ranked student in this year’s LHS graduating class. However, she was told by school officials she will not be the 2013 valedictorian, based on the district’s student handbook policy requiring a student to be “continuously enrolled in the district high school for the three semesters preceding graduation”. Cori has been a student in LISD for 11 ½ years but attended a Lamar University Academy from the beginning of her junior year through Valentine’s Day of that year. So, while Cori did attend LHS the final three semesters, she didn’t attend all of each semester. LISD Superintendent Dr. Cody Abshier said the decision to disqualify Clevenger from valedictorian honors was made by the LHS principal. He now expects a grievance will be filed, pushing the decision to his desk. After his ruling, Dr. Abshier said he expects the final determination will be placed in the hands of trustees.
