Pre-Trial: Yesterday, Judge Mark Morefield held a hearing on a motion to suppress evidence filed by defense attorney Matthew Poston in the sexual assault trial of Eric McGowen. The attorney was seeking to have a written statement and a video-taped police interview with McGowen excluded from trial. Mr. Poston argued that the statements were induced, which can lead to false accounts. He also claimed Cleveland PD was deceptive during their interview of the suspect. The district attorney’s office argued McGowen voluntarily signed a written statement that included his Miranda rights. In the end, 75^th District Judge Mark Morefield ruled the electronic and written statements were freely and voluntarily given and not induced. Therefore, both will be allowed during trial. Testimony begins today.

Flags: In July 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped from his spacecraft onto the surface of the moon after uttering those never to be forgotten words “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. Neil Armstrong died last Saturday after complications developed from heart surgery. President Barack Obama has directed American Flags on government buildings to be lowered to half staff this Friday, the day Astronaut Neil Armstrong is to be laid to rest. Flags are to be raised again to full staff at sunset also on Friday.

Hunter Education: Amanda Wilson, Dayton Community Center Director said there will be a hunter’s education course held at the center Friday from 6-10 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. September 7-8. Students must attend both days to get the state required certificate. Cost is $15 and attendees must be at least 9 years old. For those planning to hunt outside the state of Texas they must have completed the hunter’s education course regardless of age. To register call 936-257-1292 and leave a message.
