Liberty City Council: Liberty City Council and Liberty Community Development Corporation met in joint session Tuesday night to discuss a proposed road extension. The road, which would be built in two phases, extends from Lakeland through undeveloped land to the Highway 146 Bypass.  Adam Ott with Magnolia Place Health Care Center told council and LCDC members they already have an option to buy 11 acres along what would be the first phase of the roadway, if the first section of about 2300 feet, of road is built.  The nursing home facility Mr. Ott said they would be building on that land would cost between $5 and $6.5 million. Council approved an action that would allow City Manager Gary Broz to begin negotiations with land owners for acquisition of right of ways, and develop a more definite cost estimate to be reported back in 30 days.  The engineering firm of Civil Corp of Houston estimated the cost of the first phase to be $2.95 million.

New Parking Lot: Work is under way to renovate the 106,000 sq foot parking lot at Liberty’s Memorial Stadium. The parking surface suffered significant damage from large emergency supply trucks when FEMA used that site to distribute supplies following Hurricanes Rita and Ike. The renovation also includes new sidewalks for greater handicapped accessibility. Robert Ward, LISD Maintenance director said FEMA provided the largest portion of the $169,000 cost.

Rest Stop: If you are a lover of early Texas history, there is something special happening Friday. Two new rest stops along I-10 east of the Trinity River will officially open tomorrow morning. These two new rest areas were built not far from where some of the first shots in the fight for Texas independence were fired and on property where the “Turtle Bayou Resolutions” were signed. The official opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the eastbound facility.
