Commissioners: Liberty County Judge Craig McNair confirmed yesterday during commissioner’s court meeting that the county has a purchase contract for $400,000 on a piece of property to build the county’s emergency shelter/community center. The property, owned by Kim Anderson, is next to the railroad tracks in Liberty. Commissioners also approved a bid for $1.97 million to build the facility from SeTex Construction in Beaumont.

Dayton Rotary Paul Harris: The Dayton Rotary Club recently presented what is known as a Paul Harris Fellow to one of their hard working members. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary in 1905. This award, in his honor, goes to Rotarians all over the world to celebrate their community service. Dayton Rotary President Brooks Hiller presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Mark Herndon, president of FLNB Dayton Financial Center.

Workers Comp. Fraud: A Dayton man, Bert Carrol Rainey, 46, pleaded guilty in February to fraudulently obtaining workers’ compensation benefits in the Eastern District of Texas. On Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin ordered the Dayton man to pay restitution of $36,120. Bert Rainey was also sentenced to three years probation. That includes six months of home confinement.

July 3: Next Tuesday, the skies over the City of Liberty will light up with the city’s annual Independence Day Celebration. Liberty City Secretary Dianne Tidwell is in charge of the event for the city that draws hundreds of cars filled with families to the Liberty Municipal Park and to parking lots in areas surrounding the park. The program, with the Invincible Eagle Band, is at the basketball pavilion starting at 8 p.m. The fireworks display starts about dark, 9:15 or so.
