Liberty School Board: Liberty School District Trustees named Dr. Cody Abshire as the lone finalist for superintendent during Tuesday night’s board meeting. State law requires a 21-day waiting period before that hire can become official, but Dr. Abshire is expected to take the helm at LISD after the next regularly scheduled Liberty School Board meeting on July 17. Following the unanimous vote to name him as the lone finalist, Dr. Abshire said he was pleased to be returning to his high school alma mater. Cody Abshire graduated from Liberty in 1985. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree as well as his doctorate in education from Lamar University.  Currently he is Devers School Superintendent.

Luce Bayou: The Coastal Water Authority is working toward building a second pumping station along the Trinity River to supply water to the City of Houston. The new pump station and canal system would be north of Dayton at Luce Bayou.  Currently, CWA pumps water from the river to Houston from south of Dayton. According to Jerry Berry, Operations Manager for CWA, this secondary system would not increase the amount of water the city of Houston is allowed to draw from the river, rather distribute it to other locations on the north side of Houston. The entire project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2019, is expected to cost more then $221 million, with 80 % of that project being in Liberty County.
