VOLUME 27, NO. 86 WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, 2012 **************************************************** Hardin ESD Election: KSHN Radio learned Tuesday the Hardin Emergency Services District is holding an election for a proposed tax rate increase. That election is this Saturday. Liberty County EMS Director Mike Koen, who sits on the Hardin ESD board, said the reason for the election is to help defray the skyrocketing costs of fire protection. The proposition asks voters to raise the maximum tax rate from 3 cents per $100 of assessed property value to 10 cents per $100 of assessed value. **************************************************** Commissioners: During yesterday’s Liberty County Commissioners Court meeting, three commissioners, Todd Fontenot, Charlotte Warner and Melvin Hunt all transferred $5,000 each from their county precinct budgets, to the struggling Liberty County Senior Citizens Center. We have been reporting on the efforts to save the organization that serves area seniors with meals-on-wheels, transportation to doctors and the very important social aspects of being able to meet with peers. County Commissioner Norman Brown was not in attendance at yesterdays meeting. **************************************************** Drivers License Changes: The Texas Department of Public Safety has implemented the state’s new proof of residency requirement to obtain a Texas drivers license or identification card. This new requirement only applies to first-time license or ID card applicants. It is the result of legislation approved by the Texas Legislature last year. Now, first-time applicants must prove they have lived in Texas for at least 30 days in order to apply for a Texas noncommercial drivers license or ID card. Acceptable forms of documentation include a current property deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet, or a residential rental/lease agreement among other documents. To learn more about what are acceptable documents, visit the Texas DPS website at www.txdps.state.tx.us. **************************************************** Memorial Service: The annual Law Enforcement Public Safety Memorial Service is set for Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Liberty. This year’s speaker is Ron Davis, retiring associate pastor at First Baptist Church and Volunteer Chaplin for Liberty Fire and Police. **************************************************** Obituaries: Syrilda V. Blalock, 71 of Liberty. A private burial will be held at a later date. *Lake Release: 1,420 CFS – Liberty Bridge: 6.79 ASL* |
